Ellen Nugent died 9th February 1900
William Nugent was born in Virginia, Co. Cavan, Ireland abt. November 1846, son of John Nugent and Elizabeth Kilkade. At the age of 16, he emigrated to Queensland on the “Golden Dream” arriving on 28th May 1863.
He married Ellen Aspel, daughter of Moses Aspel and Joanna Hern, in Brisbane on 23rd January 1871 and before the first of their seven children was born, they had moved to the Upper North Pine area. On 19th January 1872, he selected the first of his properties – Portion 66 Parish of Samsonvale containing an area of 97 acres, in a locality that was to become known as Laceys Creek. It was 97 acres of fertile river flats where “anything would grow”. Over the next 26 years he acquired another 7 properties. By the turn of the 20th Century he had a total landholding of some 840 acres.
William Nugent died at Sandgate on 16th February 1917. His great-grandson Danny Nugent was commissioned as Pastor of the Dayboro Uniting Church last Sunday 12th February 2017.
