Conrad & Christianne Buhmann & their 9 children – c.1902

The Brisbane Courier of 20th March 1920 reported “…A large number of friends of Mr. and Mrs. C. Buhmann, Mt. Pleasant, Upper North Pine, assembled in the School of Arts on Monday last to bid them farewell, prior to their departure for Sandgate, where they will in future reside… A plated tea service on a massive oak and silver tray was presented to Mrs. Buhmann, and a smoker’s outfit from the Soldiers’ Help League, Sports Club and residents to Mr. Buhmann…”

Conrad Buhmann selected the first of his properties on 31st March 1879.  He married Christianne Leffer on 24th February 1881 and they raised nine children.  He was involved in a number of local organisations including being a foundation member of the Coronation Masonic Lodge. Two of their sons, Herman and Carl, enlisted in World War One with Herman paying the supreme sacrifice at the Somme on 4th July 1918.  Carl, who enlisted as Charles Bowman, was with the 2nd Light Horse Field Ambulance serving at Gallipoli and the Middle East.  The two youngest daughters, Hilda and Bertha, married two Heathwood brothers, Bert and Art.  100 years later there are descendants of both families still residing in the district.
