Do you remember the Billy Cart Races that were held on Australia Day for a few years in the mid-1990s? The races were run by the Lions Club of Dayboro to raise money for the Dayboro Local Ambulance Service.
The inaugural races were held in Edmonds Court on Australia Day 1994 with an estimated 500 people attending the event even though the day dawned overcast and rainy. Over 70 Billy Carts were entered in the 6 categories, including professional billy carters from Gympie. An Australia Day Fair was also held in Roderick Cruice Park that day by Job’s Daughters so there was something for everyone.
The 1995 and 1996 billy cart races were held in Alcheringa Estate which was then a new development off Hay Road. As more houses were built on the estate, it was no longer possible to hold the races at that venue and as no other suitable venue could be found, that brought a halt to the Australia Day billy cart races.
