Betty Aitcheson

Week 34 - Betty Aitcheson in front of Dayboro Post Office

Betty Aitcheson in front of Dayboro Post Office

Betty Aitcheson (later Enchelmaier) was employed as one of Dayboro’s mail girls.  Her job was to walk around town with a very heavy leather satchel slung over her shoulder delivering the mail to residents’ letterboxes no matter what the weather was like. She took over the job from Deirdre Heathwood (later Neller).

She is photographed in front of the Dayboro Post Office.  Behind her can be seen the rather ornate set of metal scales where people could find out their weight when a penny was inserted in the slot.  Also behind her is the Regal Pictures Dayboro Saturday billboard (a rather fancy name for the pictures held in the Dayboro Public Hall) advertising “A Date with Judy” made in 1948 starring Jane Powell, Elizabeth Taylor, Wallace Beery, Robert Stack and Carmen Miranda.

Betty married Les Enchelmaier on 10th July 1954.
